Webber International University is continuing to monitor the approach of Hurricane Ian.
Hurricane prediction remains part art and there is considerable uncertainty regarding this storm’s path. While Webber is well inland, we are expecting tropical storm or even hurricane strength winds beginning late Tuesday, September 27th through early Friday, September 30th, 2022. Therefore, to make sure our students who are going home can make it there safely and to keep our staff off of the roads during the storm, we are taking the following steps.
On-Campus Class and Event Cancellation
On campus classes and events are cancelled Tuesday, September 27th through Friday, September 30th, 2022. We are expecting a complete reopening on Saturday, October 1st, 2022.
On-Line Classes
On-line classes will meet as normal. If students or faculty members encounter internet or power issues, they should consult with the Academic Dean.
Campus Restricted to Students and Authorized Personnel
Effective 8:00am Tuesday, September 27th and until 8:00am Saturday, October 1st, 2022 the Webber campus is closed to all but employees and students bearing current validated ID.
Employees
Unless told otherwise by their immediate supervisor, employees should not report to work on Wednesday, September 28th and Thursday, September 29th, 2022. Employees are expected to be at work on Tuesday, September 27th and Friday September 30th, 2022. As always, schedule issues should be discussed with your immediate supervisor.
On Campus Students
It is Webber’s long-standing policy not to require our dormitory students to leave their homes during weather emergencies. If an on-campus student wants to stay with through the storm, he or she may. A Student Life employee, Security personnel, and Resident Assistants will remain on campus during throughout the storm.
With that said, we strongly encourage those with somewhere to stay outside of the area which the storm might impact to consider staying there. Historically, storms bring power outages which cause things to become uncomfortable very quickly. Also, at some point during the evening of Tuesday, September 27th, 2022 computer services – including the internet – will have to be shut down. We will do everything humanly possible to keep you safe, but once the power goes out the fun of being on campus quickly vanishes. If you have other options, you should consider them.
Normal breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022. Because cafeteria staff will not be able to safely get back on campus, bagged meals will be provided for Wednesday, September 28th and Thursday, September 29th, 2022. We are anticipating serving a normal breakfast, though perhaps a bit later than normal, on Friday, September 30th, 2022.
If you are staying on campus, you must register with Student Life before 5:00pm on Tuesday, September 27th 2022. Also, if you are staying with us, we ask that you not leave campus after 5:00pm on Tuesday, September 27th 2022 and that you let Student Life know when you go and when you return (you do not want us telling a worried parent we cannot find you because you left campus without telling us).
Off Campus Students in Unsafe Housing
If you live off campus and do not feel safe in your housing, we can find a space for you. It will possibly be in a hallway and, as noted earlier, once the power goes out the fun quickly vanishes. If you want to stay on campus, please coordinate with student life.
