No Operational Changes Planned

The Campus Emergency Operations Committee is continuing to monitor Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 (likely to develop into Tropical Storm Humberto).

While it looks like our weekend will be wetter and windier than most, the current track of this storm keeps it well away from us.

There are currently no closures, postponements, cancellations, or other operational changes planned.

We simply cannot know the weather or road conditions everywhere… ultimately you are the final judge of your personal safety and should govern yourself accordingly.

Hurricane Dorian: Tuesday, September 3rd update

Plan is to Reopen Wednesday, September 4^th

The Campus Emergency Operations Committee is continuing to monitor Hurricane Dorian. Like the National Weather Service and the Polk County Emergency Management Department, we are expecting some rain and wind today through tomorrow.

The current plan is to open Wednesday, September 4^th.

Wednesday, September 4^th classes are scheduled to meet.

Football, men’s soccer, baseball, and women’s volleyball have practices scheduled at 3:00pm Wednesday, September 4^th.

Employees should report as normal (as always, contact your immediate supervisor if this is not possible).

What if I Cannot Make it Back Safely?

Simply put, you should stay put until it’s safe.

If you cannot get back on time safely, get back as soon as you’re able, bring back proof of where you were (dated McDonald’s, Starbucks, Walmart receipt with address works just fine), and see Academic Dean as soon as you get back.

We simply cannot know the weather or road conditions everywhere… ultimately you are the final judge of your personal safety and should govern yourself accordingly.

Hurricane Dorian: Sunday 9/2/2019 Update

Currently everyone on campus is safe and sound with power, water, internet, and hot food service.

Based upon forecasts available to us, there is no change of plans since the last update:

• We are closed Tuesday, 9/3/2019
• We are planning on opening Wednesday, 9/4/2019
• Wednesday, 9/4/2019 classes are scheduled to meet
• Football, soccer, and volleyball practices are currently scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, 9/4/2019

We continue to monitor the storm and will adjust our plans if necessary. If there are changes, they will be listed here.

Hurricane Dorian: Sunday 9/1/2019 Update

While the most likely track spares our campus a direct hit, Webber International University is taking very seriously Hurricane Dorian, now on record as the strongest hurricane in recorded history. Because much of the intensity depends upon when the storm turns north – at this point a great uncertainty — we urge you in the strongest terms possible to take this storm seriously and take appropriate precautions.

Cancellations

• The Monday women’s soccer match versus Columbia International University has been CANCELLED.
• All classes for Tuesday, September 3^rd have been CANCELLED.

Campus Status

While the campus is currently closed to all but residential students and those off campus students who are riding out the storm with us, water, power (including air conditioning), internet, phone, and regularly scheduled hot meal service are all currently running as normal.

Depending upon the track of the storm, losing power, having to shut down the computer systems (including internet) and providing sack meals are all possibilities if road conditions deteriorate and staff cannot get to and from campus safely. If any of this becomes necessary we will provide as much notice as we can.

Security and Student Life personnel are on campus and will remain on campus throughout the storm to help ensure that students are safe, fed, and hydrated.

Anticipated Reopening 

We are expecting to resume regular operations, including classes on Wednesday, September 4^th at 8:00am EDT. We are expecting football, men’s and women’s soccer, and indoor volleyball to report for practice on Wednesday, September 4^th, at 12:00noon EDT. We are expecting staff to report as normal on Wednesday, September 4^th at their regular times. This, of course, depends upon our power.

We simply cannot know the weather and road conditions everywhere… you are the ultimate judge of your personal safety and should act accordingly.

Residential Students

While we have urged those with somewhere else to go to consider riding out the storm there – if we lose power the fun quickly fades – Security and Student Life remain on campus and will remain on campus throughout the storm to help keep those students riding out the storm with us safe, fed, and hydrated.

If you are staying with us it is imperative that you are signed in with Student Life. And, if you have to leave for any reason, it is critical that you let Student Life know. We simply must know who is on campus.

Off Campus Students

We understand that some of our students have elected to live in off campus housing which some might call “less than storm ready”. If you are staying somewhere you do not feel safe, we can provide you a place to sleep. We have a grand total of 4 empty beds, so it might be on the floor in a hallway. But, it will be in the hallway of a concrete building which has weathered many storms. Check with Student Life… they will be glad to help.

Please do NOT simply bunk with a friend without checking in with Student Life… it is imperative that we know who is on campus and where they are.

After the Storm

In the past, we have had students go home and not be able to make it back in time (roads flood, get closed, etc.) If this happens to you, a) bring proof of inability to get back (e.g., screen shot showing local road closures); b) bring proof you were out of town (e.g., dated McDonalds receipt, gas receipt, etc.); c) get back as soon as you can; and d) see the Chief Academic Officer as soon as you get back.

We know this is a tough time for everyone.  If you need anything after the storm, please let us know… we’ll do what we can to help.

Hurricane Dorian: Important Operational Changes

While this hurricane is still a good distance away and its path is still uncertain, at this time it appears that it will impact our Babson Park campus. Please note the following operational changes.

CANCELLATIONS

• The Saturday football game versus Middle Georgia State University has been CANCELLED.
• The Friday volleyball tournament will proceed as scheduled. The Saturday tournament is CANCELLED.
• The Saturday women’s soccer match versus Toccoa Falls College has been CANCELLED.
• The Monday women’s soccer match versus Columbia International University has been CANCELLED.
• All classes for Tuesday, September 3^rd have been CANCELLED.

CAMPUS CLOSURE

We will, sometime Sunday, close the campus (exact time will be announced tomorrow). After that time, nobody will be allowed to enter the campus for any reason until we officially reopen. Those who are staying on campus after it closes must be signed in, must notify us if they leave campus, and will not be readmitted until the campus officially reopens. Please note that there will be enhanced security (and not necessarily our security guards who know you). Be sure you have your Webber ID and that it has a Fall 2019 sticker on it.

ANTICIPATED REOPENING (subject to having power)

RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS

We are STRONGLY ENCOURAGING dorm dwellers to find another place to ride out the storm. Student Life staff, Resident Assistants, and Security will be here through the storm to keep everyone safe. We will do everything possible to keep you safe, fed, and hydrated. But we will have to shut the computers (including internet) down by Sunday night. If the power goes out – and historically it has – it gets very hot very quickly. We’ll do what we can (as soon as is safe to go outside) to get a cooling and charging station going. We do NOT evacuate our dorms during hurricanes, but again, historically those who have gone somewhere outside the storm area (i.e., somewhere with air conditioning) have been a lot happier than those who have stayed on campus. We’ll keep you safe and we’ll keep you fed, but we just cannot promise to keep you cool or entertained.

OFF CAMPUS STUDENTS

Webber International University is currently monitoring Tropical Storm Dorian.

While the storm is still quite far away and its path still uncertain, we have begun taking prudent precautions (including stocking up on food, water, and cooking gas) and suggest that others do likewise.

The Campus Emergency Operations Committee has been activated and will meet today, Tuesday October 28^th, 2019 at 4:00pm EDT. We will continue to meet as the storm approaches and any changes to operations will be posted here first.

Monitoring Hurricane Michael; “business as usual” status

Webber International University is currently monitoring Hurricane Michael. We are at business as usual status.

At 3:09pm EDT the Polk County Emergency Operations Center stated “While there are still questions about the intensity and final track, forecasters are reasonably confident that the storm will not bring significant impacts to Polk County.” We are at business as usual status.

St. Andrews Update — 9/17/2018 3:00pm

The St. Andrews campus is currently closed. We have received the following update from campus officials.

Because we are currently without power and all of Laurinburg is without water, ALL students who had not already returned home have been relocated to homes with water, power, and internet.

While the equestrian center sustained some wind and rain damage, all of our horses are safe, being fed regularly, and in good health.

Campus officials are meeting with our insurance company and disaster recovery contractors. The city is making significant progress in restoring water city-wide, including at St. Andrews.  The lake overflow is rapidly receding and damage assessment is underway with the help of a disaster recovery company.

The physical plant and security staff on the main campus and the equestrian staff at the center worked tirelessly through the storm and did a great job of mitigating some of our damages. The student life staff and Pioneer food service worked closely with students and made sure they were safe, dry and had plenty of food throughout the storm as well.

A special thanks goes out to those St. Andrews alumni and staff who are helping to house students who were unable to return to their homes during the storm.   Several members of the faculty and the administrative staff also contributed a great deal of time, energy and support over the last several days helping to mitigate damages, keeping essential services operating as long as we had power, and cleaning up wherever possible.

At this time, classes remain cancelled and offices are closed until power is restored and a full damage assessment can be completed. The campus is currently closed to all but authorized emergency recovery personnel. As stated earlier, students and staff will be given at least 48-hour notice before classes are set to resume. Please continue to check the St. Andrews website for further updates.

St. Andrews Campus — Post Florence Update

The St. Andrews campus in Laurinburg, North Carolina has temporarily suspended classes

While the students, the horses, and the campus made it through safe and sound, rain, rain, and more rain has caused some local flooding, including into the lowermost floor of our three lowest lying buildings. Moreover, rising water has temporarily disrupted our electricity, and the City of Laurinburg’s water main has broken. Travel conditions remain challenging, with many roads closed and treacherous conditions on many others.

For all those reasons, while we are taking good care of the students who are on campus, students who are not currently on campus are asked not to return to campus until further notice. Likewise, employees who have not been asked to report are asked to consult with their immediate superior before returning to campus.

Florence, Helene, Isaac, and others

Webber International University is monitoring hurricanes Florence and Helene, tropical storm Isaac, and other weather disturbances.

The St. Andrews campus in Laurinburg, North Carolina is bracing for anticipated extreme weather from hurricane Florence. The latest update can be found at: https://www.sa.edu/news/item/443-sau-weather-alert.  Classes and all athletic events except the Georgetown football game have been cancelled until Monday, September 18 when the campus is anticipated to return to business as usual status. While because of the anticipated severity of this storm students have been encouraged to move further from the anticipated path of the storm if possible (including staying with alumni who have offered to host them), security and residential life staff will remain on campus throughout the storm to care for students who elect to ride it out on campus. Dean of Student Life Rev. Dr. Verhey can be reached at 910-277-5145. The Florida campus’ emergency management team will post updates as we get them, but in the event of phone and/or power outage, the North Carolina campus will not be able to reach us either.

The Florida campus appears to be out of the path of each of these storms. We are at business as usual status. As we do each hurricane season, we remain vigilant, keep our supplies stocked, monitor the tropics, and suggest that students, employees, friends and families do likewise.
