Message: Webber International University is under a hurricane warning. Bands of rain and wind from the storm have arrived and will continue to worsen through the day and the night.

At its 12:00 noon EST daily briefing, the Polk County Emergency Management staff (https://www.polk-county.net/) stated that all of Polk County is currently under a hurricane warning. We have been under tornado watches or warnings most of the day and this is expected to continue throughout the day and into tomorrow morning. Tropical storm force winds are expected through midday today (Sunday, September 10th, 2017) with hurricane force winds expected between 9pm EDT tonight (Sunday) through midday tomorrow, Monday, September 11th, 2017. 10” to 20” of rain is expected. 10 million people are expected to be without power.

Webber has staff on site. As of Sunday, September 10th, 2017 at 1:00pm EDT the campus still had power and water, and all students staying with us are safe and accounted for. Breakfast was served this morning and students were provided two bagged meals for tonight’s dinner and tomorrow’s brunch.  We filed up numerous coolers with water before the storm.  We are anticipating serving a hot dinner tomorrow, September 11th, 2017.

We are anticipating reopening on Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 at 5:00am EDT.

Future Notices

Future notices will be posted as information becomes available.

Important: our phones are voice-over-IP (VOIP). They will almost certainly likely go out; however, the most current status is always on this website. Friday, September 8th, 2017, 1:00pm: Secured for Hurricane Irma

Status: Secured for Hurricane Irma

Message: Webber International University is carefully monitoring the approach of Hurricane Irma and has secured for her arrival.

At its 12:00 noon EST daily briefing, the Polk County Emergency Management staff (https://www.polk-county.net/) stated that all of Polk County is currently under a hurricane watch. Tropical storm force winds are expected mid-day to late Saturday, September 9th, 2017. Hurricane force winds are expected early Sunday, September 10th, 2017 and are expected to continue through most of Monday, September 11th, 2017. 8” to 10” of rain is expected. 10 million people are expected to be without power. Hurricane force winds are expected to extend 70 miles beyond the eye.

Webber’s last scheduled on-campus activity – class, practice, meeting, etc., – ended at 3:05pm EDT yesterday, Thursday, September 7th, 2017. We have strongly advised those students who are going somewhere else to be on their way there while there is time to make it safely. We have requested any dorm dwelling student who is leaving to let Student Life know this so all may be accounted for.

We have staff on site, food, water, board games, flash lights, etc., for those who are weathering the storm with us. We will keep activities going as long as it is safe to do so. Because it is likely that there will be a period of time when it will be dangerous to be outside and we will be without power, internet, etc. we strongly urge those staying with us to have a few snacks and a few diversions (board game, book, etc.) tucked away. We have warned people to stay inside and away from windows once the winds become dangerous. We have plenty of food, but meal schedules are subject to change as safety dictates; Student Life staff will post updates as conditions change. You must let Student Life know if you leave campus.

Football is expected back around mid-day Saturday. The bus will be making stops near Ocala and Lake City. Please coordinate directly with your student should you wish to meet them at either of these stops.

Students who do not live on campus and employees may ride out the storm with us (and, we’ll feed you regardless of whether or not you’re on a meal plan). You must check in with Student Life on Saturday evening and must let them know if you leave (again, we need to know who’s here).  Please understand that all we can offer is floor space and meals… please bring air mattress / sleeping bag, pillow, sheets, snacks, books, etc.

Employees should check with immediate supervisor for work schedule between now and Tuesday morning.  Any employee who is not scheduled who comes to campus must check in and out at the Babson Center.

We are anticipating reopening on Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 at 5:00am EDT.

Future Notices

Future notices will be posted as information becomes available.

Important: our phones are voice-over-IP (VOIP). In a nutshell, if we lose power or internet, they stop working. Please do not assume that an unanswered phone means the worst. The most current status is always on this website. Security does have a cell phone which students and employees may call if necessary (phone number is posted at switchboard; please do not share as phone calls from those outside the university hamper their ability to keep you safe).

Wednesday, September 6th, 2017, 1:30pm EDT: Major Operational Changes

Status: Major Operational Changes – Precautionary Cancellations

Message: Webber International University is carefully monitoring the approach of Hurricane Irma and is taking the precautions outlined below.

Cancellations and Closures

Webber International University has CANCELLED all on-campus classes, athletic practices, meetings, games, and other organized activities from 3:05pm EDT Thursday, September 7th, 2017 (Thursday day classes will meet; Thursday night classes will not meet) through 5:00am EDT Tuesday, September 12th, 2017.

We anticipate opening as normal at 5:00am EDT Tuesday, September 12th, 2017.

While classes and activities have been cancelled, the campus will remain open (and staff should report unless instructed otherwise by their immediate supervisor) through 5:00pm EDT Friday, September 8th, 2017.

The campus will close and be restricted to authorized personnel and registered residents only from 5:00pm EDT Friday, September 8th, 2017 through 5:00am EDT Tuesday, September 12th, 2017. Nobody will be admitted to or allowed to remain on the campus during this time unless they can produce current, valid Webber ID. Any non-scheduled employee on campus during these hours must sign in and out at the Babson Center. All residents riding out the storm with us must be registered with Student Life and must alert Student Life if they elect to leave the campus.

On Campus Residents

Nobody can predict the next storm, but Webber has survived many storms. We have stocked up on food, water, and cooking gas. We will have staff on campus to help insure safety and security. We’ll play whatever games and do whatever activities the weather allows. And, while meal times and what we serve may vary depending upon the weather conditions, we’ll make sure everyone is fed.

However, please understand that should the power go out – and it often does when we have severe weather – it just is not luxurious on campus. Air conditioning goes out. Individual room lights go out. The internet goes out. We have generators to provide basic emergency lighting along sidewalks and some lighting and some fans in the cafeteria. In addition, even if we retain power, we’ll have to shut down the computer network (and with it the internet) before tropical storm force winds get here (Friday night or Saturday morning at the latest).

If you’re staying with us, it is critical that Student Life know 1) that you are here; and 2) if you leave.

Off Campus Students

We urge you to rush your emergency preparations to conclusion.

If you feel unsafe in your home, you can stay with us. Please check in with student life on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 between 5:00pm EDT and 6:00pm EDT. Please understand that because our dorms are full, all we can offer you is a space to sleep. You’ll need to bring sleeping bag or air mattress, pillow, etc. It will be shelter style sleeping in the Yentes Center. Please read section above to understand that we’ll do the best we can, but should the power go out, it will be very basic accommodations.

Employees

We are open for business as usual through 5:00pm EDT Friday, September 8th, 2017.

Please check with your immediate supervisor regarding work schedule Saturday, September 9th, 2017 through Monday, September 11th, 2017.

We anticipate a normal opening at 5:00am EDT Tuesday, September 12th, 2017.

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017, 11:15am EDT: Carefully Monitoring Approach of Irma

Status: Carefully monitoring approach; currently “business as usual”

Message: Monitoring Hurricane Irma

Webber International University is carefully monitoring the approach of Hurricane Irma.

The Campus Emergency Committee has been activated, is regularly meeting, and will continue to meet regularly until this storm had passed and the all clear has been given.

While Polk County, Florida is well inland and is generally recognized as an evacuation zone for coastal communities, during hurricane season Webber maintains a constant state of readiness. We urge our friends and families to have a plan and to be ready to execute it.

While we do not yet know the path of this storm, we are as a precautionary measure securing for tropical storm winds, topping off cooking gas (we serve meals irrespective of whether we have electricity), stocking up on bottled water, etc. Staff are on campus 24/7/365 to help insure safety and security of our residents.

At this time, there have been no changes to operations. If changes do occur, they will be communicated via all available channels; however www.WebberEmergency.com always has the latest information.
